Aims of the Awards
The National Railway Heritage Awards have been presented annually since 1979 and were granted charitable status in 2004. The objective of the Awards is to encourage high standards of restoration of buildings, structures and signalling installations and of their environmental care, thus promoting public recognition and awareness of our historic railway and tramway heritage and environment.
We aim to promote careful design and quality of workmanship in restoration, conversion, modernisation, adaptation and maintenance, taking proper account of all relevant factors, particularly manpower and funding. We also encourage owners and occupiers of former railway or tramway premises now used for other purposes to retain as much as possible of their original character.
