On Sunday 3 July, Lord Faulkner of Worcester, President of the Heritage Railway Association, unveiled the plaque awarded to the St Albans Signalbox Preservation Society for their restoration of the Grade II listed St Albans South box. The box, originally constructed in 1892 and extended in 1906, was superseded in 1979 but was initially retained for use by the station announcer. After some years out of use and with its future uncertain, the box was rescued in 2002 with restoration commencing four years later. The success of the restoration was marked in the 2010 National Railway Heritage Awards, made in December 2010, when the structure was awarded one of the Invensys Rail Signalling Awards.
